TOP TEN FOOD & BEVERAGE
TRENDS FOR 2007 PREDICTED The top ten food and beverage trends for 2007, as forecast by Datamonitor, include: -
Calorie-burning beverages
-
Satiety-enhancing foods and drinks
-
-
Local sourcing of ingredients - The concept of "Food Miles" is surfacing, reflecting a desire to help the environment by buying food that doesn't need to be transported long distance.
-
-
Antioxidants – Increased awareness unleashed a boom in dark chocolate in 2006. "Superfruits" like goji berries, acai and pomegranate, high in antioxidants, are positioned for mainstream acceptance.
-
Immunity-boosting foods and drinks – Probiotic foods that help regulate digestive tract health, including cultured dairy drinks and yogurts, are leading the way. Watch for probiotic juices, snack bars and even breakfast cereals.
-
Food and drink for one – Research shows the average number of persons per household has slipped to barely more than two.
-
"Smart" products and packages – Packaging to indicate freshness is coming.
-
"Better for You" beer – With beer losing ground to wine, watch for vitamin-fortified beer to hit the market.
CSPI PETITIONS FDA TO CREATE
“HEALTHY FOOD” LABELING SYSTEM
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) formally petitioned FDA to design a national set of symbols to help consumers quickly identify healthier foods. While Kraft has a “Sensible Solution”, Pepsi has a “Smart Spot” and the American Heart Association licenses it’s “heart-check” symbol, CSPI says consumers can easily be confused or misled since the various programs have different aims and use inconsistent nutrition criteria.
FDA HOLDS HEARING ON
FUNCTIONAL FOODS
In a recent public hearing by FDA, defining and establishing a separate category for “functional foods” met with resistance from food and nutrition expert witnesses who said existing regulations provide a mechanism for determining safety food and food ingredients.
The American Dietetic Association (ADA) went on record against a functional foods category. ADA noted “recent studies have shown that consumers cannot distinguish between health claims and structure/function claims.” Furthermore, AA said a regulatory process for claiming a health benefit related to a food, food component or dietary supplement is already in place.
To address the ambiguities and complexity regarding the labeling of functional foods, ADA recommended a broader interpretation of the term “nutritive,” since the distinction between what is “nutritive” versus “health promoting” or “disease prevention” is blurred. ADA’s position paper on Functional Foods is accessible at http://www.eatright.org/cps/rde/xchg/ada/hs.xsl/advocacy_10091_ENU_HTML.htm. WORD IS OUT
