The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (NJDOH) is conducting a survey of flavor manufacturers in New Jersey on respiratory health and safety issues and the use of diacetyl. The survey was issued July 27. A copy is attached.
The letter accompanying the survey says it’s a “non-regulatory, public health outreach project.” FEMA says discussions with NJDOH staff revealed they were not aware of FEMA's extensive activities on respiratory health and safety. FEMA is scheduling a meeting with NJDOH staff for the week of Aug. 13 to discuss cooperation and collaboration.
The survey contains a number of specific inquiries related to the use of diacetyl in flavor manufacturing facilities including inquiries related to exposure control measures. NJDOH staff confirmed that responses to the survey are likely to become available to the public upon request through the state's freedom of information programs.
FEMA is encouraging companies to call its legal counsel, John Hallagan (202-331-2333), for more information about the survey before developing their responses. NJDOH requested responses to the survey by Aug. 15.
